South Korean running influencer Yoo Ji-won has d+ied after collapsing about 500 metres from the finish line of a half-marathon during the 2026 Seoul Race.
The 25-year-old runner and postgraduate student at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) became unconscious at about 8:49 a.m. on Sunday, October 11, after covering approximately 20.6 kilometres of the 21.0975-kilometre race.
According to a statement released by the race organising committee on Monday, an official found Yoo unconscious on a street in central Seoul, near Jonggak subway station, and alerted emergency services.
Medical personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before she was transported to a hospital by ambulance. However, she never regained consciousness and d+ied shortly afterwards.
Her official cause of d+ath has not been confirmed.
An initial comment from a race official to local media suggested that Yoo might have collapsed after overexerting herself, but no official findings have been released.
In its statement, the organising committee expressed condolences to her family and pledged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We pray for the repose of the deceased and extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family facing this sudden sorrow,” the committee said, adding that it would carefully investigate the case and take appropriate action.Yoo regularly documented her running journey on social media, where she had built a substantial following.
The Seoul Race, organised by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper, attracted about 12,000 participants for the half-marathon and a shorter 11-kilometre race through central Seoul.
The routes passed several landmarks, including Gwanghwamun and Heunginjeongmun, the city’s historic eastern gate.
